Tennis Lessons for Kids in Singapore — Junior Programme by TAG International

By Coach XT (Tan Xu Teng) and the TAG International Tennis Academy coaching team. Coach XT founded TAG International in 2007 and has coached in Singapore since 2001 — PTR Full Professional certified for elite juniors aged 11–17, AATC Level 2, NROC-accredited via CoachSG and MOE-registered, career-high ITF Men’s 35+ World #56 and Singapore Open Champion 2019. Last updated: October 2026.

TAG International’s junior tennis programme has produced more than 15 national champions since the academy was founded in 2007. The programme caters for children from age 3 right through to competitive juniors at 16 and beyond — with age-specific lesson structures, appropriate equipment, and coaching methodologies that align with each child’s developmental stage.

Starting tennis young gives children a significant advantage in motor skill development, discipline, and competitive mindset. TAG’s junior coaches understand that a child’s first experience of the sport shapes their relationship with it for life. Every lesson is therefore designed to build genuine technical foundations while keeping the energy positive, the environment encouraging, and the sessions genuinely fun.

Junior Programme Levels

The TAG junior programme progresses children through structured levels: Pee Wee (ages 3–4), Learners (ages 5–6), Grippers (ages 5–8), Junior Novice (ages 7–14), and Junior Players (ages 8–14, Levels 1 to 3). Each level builds on the last — introducing more complex techniques, longer rallies, and more match-play situations as the child’s skills develop. Children move between levels based on demonstrated ability, not just age, which keeps more talented juniors consistently challenged.

Private one-on-one junior lessons are available for children who want accelerated development, who are preparing for school team selection or STA competition, or who have specific technical issues that benefit from individual focused coaching. Several of TAG’s national-ranked junior players have been developed through a combination of group programme work and private technical sessions.

Junior Results Under TAG Coaching

The clearest measure of a junior programme is what its players go on to win. These are national-level results published on Coach XT’s own coaching record:

  • Brian Hartono — U12 Singles Champion in 2024 at age 11, then U12 Doubles Champion in 2025 and winner of an ATF junior tournament in Thailand.
  • Kate Yap — U16 Singles Champion, 2025.
  • Joy Lee — U14 Singles Champion in 2023, then selected for Singapore’s National Junior Fed Cup team in 2024.
  • Amelie Gonzalez — U16 Singles Champion, 2023.
  • Charlotte Yeo and Claire Chan — U16 Singles Champions who went on to represent Singapore at World Juniors.

Each of those players trained in the same coaching system described on this page.

What Parents Should Know

TAG International keeps junior class sizes small — a maximum of six students per coach — to ensure every child receives meaningful instruction and correction in every session. Parents frequently observe sessions and are encouraged to ask coaches about progress, development priorities, and how to support their child’s practice between lessons. Tennis is a sport for life, and TAG’s junior programme is designed to give children the technical foundation and genuine love for the game that makes that possible.

Two practical points specific to coaching children in Singapore. First, heat: junior sessions on outdoor courts are scheduled and paced around it, and our coach’s guide to training safely in Singapore’s heat and humidity explains how. Second, kit: children outgrow and soak through equipment faster than adults, and our match-day tennis bag checklist covers what should be in a junior’s bag.

Why TAG International for Junior Development

TAG’s founder Coach XT coached Singapore’s Men’s National Team in 2018, and has been Head Coach at Nanyang Girls’ High School since 2018. This means your child trains within the same coaching system that develops Singapore’s national and school-team players. TAG also runs junior sessions at venues across the island. Winchester Tennis Arena at Alexandra Park, built in 2013, has four sheltered indoor courts that make year-round training possible rain or shine. For condo-based families, coaches also travel directly to your condominium court — no commute needed.

Juniors who progress into competitive tennis train alongside coaches who still compete at ranked level, with credentials as published on their own profiles: Coach Bo Alburo, ITF Men’s 35+ World No. 2 in singles; Coach Kento Takeuchi, former ATP professional with a career-high ATP ranking of No. 378 and All Japan U-18 Champion; and Coach Wataru Ochi, with more than 25 years coaching in Singapore and experience working alongside WTA and ATP tour players. Group and private junior tennis at NTU@one-north is also run by Sanwa X Tennis Academy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can a child start tennis lessons in Singapore?

From age 3, in the Pee Wee level. Sessions at that age use smaller racquets, lower-compression balls and short-court games, and are built around coordination and balance rather than technique.

How many children are in a junior group class?

A maximum of six students per coach, so every child gets individual correction in each session.

Should my child do group or private lessons?

Group lessons for foundations, peers and match play; private lessons to accelerate, to fix a specific technical problem, or to prepare for school team selection or STA competition. Many of our competitive juniors do both. Our private versus group comparison goes through the trade-offs.

Do coaches come to our condominium court?

Yes, island-wide. See condominium tennis lessons for how that works.

Is tennis or pickleball better for a young child?

They develop different things, and a lot of Singapore families now try both. Our tennis versus pickleball guide compares them for kids, and PickleChoo runs the pickleball courts and coaching side.
