Kids Tennis Lessons FAQ

Thinking about tennis for your child in Singapore? This FAQ covers the questions parents ask us most — the right age to start, equipment, class sizes, wet-weather policy and how to enrol. For the full junior programme, see our kids tennis lessons in Singapore guide.

What’s the best age for my child to start tennis?

Children can begin as early as 4 to 5 years old using smaller racquets, softer balls and shorter courts that suit their size. At this age, the focus is on coordination, balance and having fun rather than technique. Kids who start a bit older, around 7 or 8, often pick up strokes quickly too — there’s no single “right” age.

Does my child need their own racquet?

For trial and early lessons, we can provide a suitably sized racquet, so there’s no upfront cost. Children need a racquet that matches their height and grip strength, and your coach will recommend the correct size when your child is ready to buy. Using the right-sized racquet helps prevent bad habits and strain.

What should my child wear and bring?

Comfortable sportswear, a cap for outdoor sessions and proper court shoes with good grip (not slippery school shoes or thick-soled trainers). Please pack a water bottle and a small towel, as Singapore’s heat means kids need to hydrate often. Sunscreen is a good idea for outdoor venues.

What happens if it rains on lesson day?

Because TAG owns Winchester Tennis Arena with 4 sheltered indoor courts at Alexandra Park, kids’ lessons can continue rain or shine there. For outdoor venues, your coach will arrange a rescheduling or, where possible, move the session indoors. Wet-weather disruptions are far less of a worry with us.

How big are the kids’ classes?

We offer both private 1-to-1 coaching and small group classes. Smaller groups mean more individual attention and more time hitting the ball, which matters a lot for young learners. Tell us your child’s age and level and we’ll place them in a suitable group, or arrange private sessions.

How long should a kids’ lesson be?

Younger children usually do well with 45-minute to one-hour sessions, which keeps them engaged without losing focus. Older or more advanced kids can handle longer sessions. We recommend once or twice a week for steady, enjoyable progress.

Will the coaches know how to handle young children?

Yes. Our full-time coaches are accredited ex-pros (ITF/LTA/STA-certified) who are experienced in coaching children, keeping sessions structured, safe and fun. We’re not a roster of casual freelancers — every coach is part of our trained, full-time team led by founder Coach XT.

My child is shy or not very sporty — will they cope?

Absolutely. Our coaches are used to encouraging nervous or less sporty kids, building confidence through small wins and lots of positive reinforcement. Tennis is a great way for shy children to develop coordination and self-belief in a supportive setting. Many parents are surprised how quickly their child warms up to it.

Where do you run kids’ lessons?

Island-wide, including our indoor Winchester Tennis Arena at Alexandra Park, plus venues like TAG @ One-North, Chinese Swimming Club, NUSS @ Kent Ridge, SJI International, Nanyang Girls’ High and Eunos/Ubi Techpark. We also coach at many condominium courts, so we can often come to your estate. WhatsApp us to find the closest option.

How much do kids’ lessons cost?

Private 1-to-1 lessons start from around S$120–160 per hour depending on indoor/outdoor and package size, while group classes offer a more budget-friendly option. We’ll help you choose a package that fits your child’s goals and your schedule. Message us for current group availability.

How do I enrol my child?

Just WhatsApp us at +65 9029 8400 with your child’s age, level and your preferred area, and we’ll recommend a class or coach. You can also email contactus@tagtennis.org. We’ll sort out the racquet and venue so you can simply show up.
