Adult Tennis Lessons in Singapore — Private & Group Coaching

Written by the coaching team at TAG International Tennis Academy and reviewed by Coach XT (Tan Xu Teng), Founder of TAG International and ITF Men’s 35+ World #56. Last updated: September 2026.

It is never too late to learn tennis well. Adult tennis lessons in Singapore with TAG International Tennis Academy are built for the way grown-ups actually learn — with clear explanations, structured progression, and coaching that respects your time. Whether you are picking up a racquet for the first time, returning after years away, or trying to break through a plateau in your club games, our certified coaches meet you exactly where you are. TAG has coached adults across Singapore since 2001, and this guide covers everything you need to start.

Who Adult Tennis Lessons Are For

Tennis is one of the rare sports that genuinely rewards adult beginners. The tactical awareness, patience and focus you already have often more than make up for starting later. We coach three main groups of adults: complete beginners who want a proper foundation from lesson one; returning players whose body remembers more than they expect once a coach helps it come back; and improvers who play socially but want to fix a shaky backhand, a serve that breaks down under pressure, or footwork that leaves them out of position. Whichever you are, the fastest results come from starting with proper technique rather than reinforcing bad habits picked up in casual play.

Private vs Group Adult Lessons

A private tennis lesson is the fastest route to improvement — every minute is calibrated to your specific goals, so if your backhand is the problem, the whole session targets it. Private coaching suits adults with limited time, clear goals, or a technical issue that needs focused attention. Group lessons, by contrast, add a social element that many adults value: you rally with real players at varied pace and spin, in a lower-pressure setting that helps beginners relax and absorb. Many of our most improved adult students do one private session a week alongside regular social or group play — the combination is remarkably effective.

Coached by World-Ranked Players

What sets TAG’s adult coaching apart is the calibre of the coaching bench. The academy was founded by Coach XT (Tan Xu Teng) — ITF Men’s 35+ World #56, PTR Full Professional and the first Senior Coach of the ActiveSG Tennis Academy — and the roster includes Coach Bo Alburo, ITF Men’s 35+ World #2 and a nine-time Singapore Open champion. Every TAG coach is certified (ITF, PTR or equivalent) and an active competitive player, so the technique you learn is the technique they still compete with. Prefer to compare coaches yourself? Where We Coach Adults

TAG coaches work island-wide — at your condominium court, public courts, and clubs across every region. Beyond Tennis: Pickleball for Adults

Many adult players in Singapore now enjoy both tennis and pickleball. If you would like a lower-impact, fast-to-learn racquet sport alongside your tennis, TAG runs Singapore’s premier outdoor pickleball courts and coaching through PickleChoo. Families looking for Japanese, ATP Tour–calibre coaching can also train with our partner academy Sanwa X Tennis Academy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I too old to start tennis?

No. We regularly coach adults who start in their 40s, 50s and beyond and go on to play competitive club doubles. Adults learn tactically and often progress quickly with proper coaching. The key is starting with correct technique rather than locking in faults from casual play.

How many lessons before I can play a social game?

With regular coaching, most adult beginners can sustain a rally and play basic social tennis within 8 to 12 lessons. Feeling comfortable in casual doubles typically takes around 3 to 6 months of consistent practice. Private lessons speed this up compared with group-only coaching.

What should I bring to my first lesson?

Comfortable sports clothing, court or cross-training shoes, and a water bottle. Your coach can lend a racquet for a trial session and will advise on what to buy once you are ready to invest in your own.
