New to tennis in Singapore? This FAQ answers the questions we hear most from first-timers — what to wear, what it costs, what happens when it rains, and how to book your first session. For the full picture of how complete beginners get started with us, see our beginner tennis lessons in Singapore guide.

I’ve never held a racquet before — is it too late to start?
Not at all. We coach complete beginners of all ages every week, from kids picking up their first racquet to working adults and retirees starting fresh. Our accredited full-time coaches break the game down into simple, manageable steps so you build confidence quickly. Most beginners are rallying within their first few lessons.
Do I need to buy my own racquet for the first lesson?
No, you don’t. We can lend you a suitable racquet for your trial and early lessons, so there’s no need to spend a cent before you know you enjoy the game. Once you’re committed, your coach will recommend the right racquet for your grip size, strength and playing style.
What should I wear and bring to a beginner lesson?
Wear comfortable sportswear and proper court shoes (tennis or non-marking trainers — not running shoes with thick soles, as they don’t grip well for lateral movement). Bring a water bottle, a small towel and a cap if you’re playing outdoors, as Singapore’s sun and humidity can be intense. We’ll provide the balls and can lend a racquet if needed.
What happens if it rains during my lesson?
This is where we’re different — TAG owns Winchester Tennis Arena at Alexandra Park, which has 4 sheltered indoor courts, so your lesson can go ahead rain or shine. For outdoor venues, your coach will advise on rescheduling or, where possible, shifting to our indoor courts. You’ll rarely lose a session to Singapore’s afternoon thunderstorms.
How long is each lesson and how often should beginners train?
Lessons typically run for one hour, which is ideal for building skills without burning out. For steady progress, we recommend training once or twice a week, especially in the early months when muscle memory is forming. Consistency matters more than intensity when you’re starting out.
How much do beginner lessons cost?
Private 1-to-1 lessons start from around S$120–160 per hour, depending on whether you’re indoors or outdoors and the size of your package. Group lessons are a more affordable option if you’d like to learn alongside others. WhatsApp us and we’ll recommend the best-value package for your goals.
Where can I take lessons?
We coach island-wide. Our home base is Winchester Tennis Arena (indoor) at Alexandra Park, and we also run sessions at TAG @ One-North, Chinese Swimming Club, NUSS @ Kent Ridge, SJI International, Nanyang Girls’ High, Eunos/Ubi Techpark, plus many condominium courts. If you have a court at your condo, we can usually come to you.
Will I get an experienced coach, or a part-timer?
Every lesson is delivered by one of our accredited, full-time coaches — all ex-pro players certified by bodies such as the ITF, LTA and STA. We don’t rely on freelancers. Our founder, Coach XT (Tan Xu Teng), is an ITF World #56-ranked, PTR-certified coach, and that standard runs through the whole team.
Can I try a lesson before signing up for a package?
Yes. Many beginners start with a trial lesson so they can meet their coach, get a feel for the court and decide if tennis is for them before committing. Just WhatsApp us to arrange a convenient slot at a venue near you.
How do I book my first beginner lesson?
The fastest way is to WhatsApp us at +65 9029 8400 — tell us your level, preferred area and availability, and we’ll match you with a coach. You can also email contactus@tagtennis.org. We’ll handle the rest, from venue to racquet.
