Coach Bo Alburo plays an All Court Player style of tennis

Our previous tactical article by Singapore Open Champion Coach Rocky Paglalunan focused on the “Dark Arts of the Defensive Baseliner”. In this article, Coach Bo Alburo Lourelu, Singapore Open Champion and ITF World #2, shares the tactical secrets of his style of play as an all court player.

What makes a Tennis Player an All Court Player?

All Court Player - Coach Bo Alburo, ITF 35+ World #2

The All Court Player is skilled and comfortable executing a lot of different shots from all areas of the tennis court. An All Court Player is very flexible and has the ability to adapt to different opponents and changing situations in the ebb and flow in the course of a tennis match, and is usually very athletic. All Court Players use their variety in a very offensive way, not necessarily in the form of big shots, but in the form of adapting to their oppoents and giving them shots their opponents do not like and constantly targeting their weaknesses in various ways.

What makes a good All Court Player so Formidable?

  1. All Court Players usually have every shot in the book, and can play every style of tennis: as an attacking baseliner, defensive baseliner, a counterpuncher, a serve and volleyer, a chip-and-charger, and sometimes, even as spin doctors.
  2. All-court players use the best parts from each style of play and combine them to create a dangerous style of tennis to play against. They will use their versatility to exploit their opponent’s weaknesses.

  3. All Court Players have the ability to keep adjusting to their opponents and adapting to the situations their opponents throw at them. They will use shots that are best matched to exploit their opponent’s weaknesses.
  4. All-court players typically have the speed, fitness and grit of a defensive baseliner, and the confidence and skill of attacking baseliners, and have the touch of spin doctors, and the transition and net play ability of serve and volleyers and chip-and-chargers. They are extremely versatile.

  5. All Court Players are very unpredictable and keeps you on your toes all the time. You are constantly surprised by their array of shot making and you are constantly off balanced. The moment you are in trouble you also sense they will be transitioning to the net, forcing you to go for much more to avoid countenancing a put away volley. They are very difficult to read.
  6. All Court Players are very good at constructing points and playing patterns, keeping the percentages in their favour. They will pull attacking baseliners to the net with the short draw or drop shots to pass them or transition the net to pressure defensive baseliners into hitting to smaller targets. They give themselves a very good chance of winning.

  7. All Court Players usually have outstanding excellent continental grip skills – volley, half-volley, slice backhand, overhead, serve. They can surprise by serve and volleying or chip and charging when they are up in the game score to force their opponents to be constantly under severe pressure or to take a disproportionate amount of risk with their proactive court positioning.
  8. All Court Players, to play this style, are almost always efficient and effective movers. They have keen time and space awareness which enables them to take great court position to facilitate their attack and defense.

  9. They have the ability to mix up speed, spin, height and depth of the ball to use every part of the court. They can also transition the net with ease to play in the front of the court with such variation.
